A Prayer for the Conversation You've Been Avoiding

“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”Colossians 4:6 (WEB)
You know the conversation. You have rehearsed it in the shower, drafted it in your head during the commute, and swallowed it at the dinner table three nights in a row. Maybe it is an apology you owe. A boundary you need to draw. A truth someone you love does not want to hear.
Avoiding it has not made it smaller. Hard conversations are like dishes in the sink: they do not wash themselves, and they do not smell better with time.
Scripture does not tell us to win conversations. It tells us how to carry them:
Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. (Colossians 4:6)
Grace first. Salt second. Grace means you go in wanting good for the other person, not just relief for yourself. Salt means you still say the true thing. Most of us pick one: all grace and no honesty, or all honesty and no grace. God asks for both in the same sentence.
A prayer before you speak
Father, You know the conversation I have been carrying. Give me the courage to stop rehearsing and start speaking. Put grace in my voice, honesty on my tongue, and love underneath every word. Soften my heart toward them before I try to say anything to them. And whatever they say back, help me leave the outcome with You. Amen.
Try this today
Do not aim for the perfect script. Aim for the first sentence. Write down one honest, kind opening line, then pick the time and say it. God does not need you to be eloquent. He just needs you to be willing.
