Devotions for the School Pickup Line

Every school day, all over the country, a strange little sabbath happens: thousands of parents sit parked in a line of cars, doing nothing, waiting for a bell to ring.

We usually spend it scrolling. But think about what the pickup line actually is. It might be the only fifteen minutes of your day when nobody can reach you, nothing can be cleaned, and nowhere else can be driven. You are, by law and by car line etiquette, required to sit still.

God told His people to weave Him into exactly these kinds of ordinary spaces:

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. (Deuteronomy 6:7)

When you sit. When you travel. Faith was never meant to live only on Sunday mornings. It was designed for the in-between minutes, and the pickup line is fifteen of them, every single day.

A simple pickup line liturgy

1. Park and put the phone in the glove box. Just for today.
2. Pray for the kid you are about to pick up. Their friendships, their teacher, the thing they are worried about that they have not told you yet.
3. Get quiet for one minute. No words. Just remember God is in the car too.
4. Decide your greeting. The first thirty seconds after the door opens sets the tone of the whole afternoon. Choose warmth on purpose.

Then the bell rings, the door slides open, and the holiest moment of your day walks out wearing a backpack.

Try this today

Just do step two. One honest prayer for your child while you watch the door they will come out of. It will change how you see them when they do.

Father, thank You for the child about to climb into this car. While I wait for them, I bring them to You. Be in their friendships, their fears, and their afternoon. And be in me when I say hello. Amen.
