For the Ceiling-Starers: A Devotional for When You Can't Sleep

“In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.”Psalm 4:8 (WEB)
It is somewhere around three in the morning. The house is quiet. Everyone you love is asleep. And you are lying there doing math on the ceiling: hours until the alarm, money until payday, words you should have said, words you should not have.
Nighttime does something unfair to our problems. It makes them bigger and takes away every tool you have for solving them. You cannot call anyone. You cannot fix anything. You can only lie there and think.
David knew those hours. He wrote a lot of psalms at night, and not the peaceful kind. But listen to how he ends one of them:
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. (Psalm 4:8)
Read the small word in the middle: alone. Not the locked door. Not the savings account. Not the plan you keep rehearsing in the dark. God alone makes you dwell in safety, and He is awake right now, working on things you cannot touch from your pillow.
Here is what that means practically. The problem you are turning over at 3 a.m. is not being neglected while you sleep. It is being held by Someone who never needed your worry to manage it. You are not the night watchman of your own life. That job is taken, and He does not get tired.
Try this tonight
Instead of solving, hand it over one piece at a time. Name the worry out loud, quietly, then say: "You are awake. I do not have to be." Repeat it as many times as it takes. You are not clearing your mind. You are just moving the weight to the only One who can carry it through the night.
Lord, You never sleep, so I do not have to keep watch. Take what I am holding right now, the thing I cannot fix at this hour, and hold it until morning. Quiet my mind. Give my body rest. And thank You that Your mercies will be new when I wake up. Amen.
