Grace for the Sandwich Years: A Devotional for Caring for Aging Parents

Grace for the Sandwich Years: A Devotional for Caring for Aging Parents: devotional cover photo
Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.Isaiah 46:4 (WEB)

Nobody hands you a manual for the day the roles reverse. One season you are the child calling home for advice. The next you are managing medications, driving to appointments, and explaining the same thing for the third time with a patience you have to pray for.

If you are raising kids while caring for parents, they call it the sandwich years. Mostly it just feels like being needed from both directions at once, with nothing left over for yourself.

Here is what God says about growing old, and it changes everything about how we carry the people we love:

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver. (Isaiah 46:4)

Read that again slowly. You are not the only one carrying your mother or father. God was carrying them before you were born, and He has not handed them off to you and walked away. You are joining Him in work He is already doing.

That matters, because caregivers quietly believe everything depends on them. It does not. The pill sorter matters. The phone calls matter. But underneath your tired arms are everlasting ones.

Try this today

Before the next hard task, the appointment, the difficult conversation, the long drive, say this out loud: "God, You are carrying them. I am just helping." Then do the task as a helper, not as the last line of defense. Helpers get to rest. Helpers get to ask for help themselves.

Lord, You have carried my parents through every year of their lives. Carry them still. And carry me too, because I am more tired than I usually admit. Give me patience when it runs low and grace for this season I never trained for. Amen.
