Work as Worship

Work as Worship: devotional cover photo
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men.Colossians 3:23 (WEB)

Nobody claps for the laundry. There's no applause for answering forty emails, packing lunches, or fixing the same leaky faucet twice. Most of the work that fills our days is invisible, and it's easy to believe invisible means insignificant.

Paul wrote Colossians 3:23 to ordinary workers doing ordinary jobs, most of whom had no status and no audience. His instruction turned every task upside down: work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men.

That one phrase changes the math. If the audience is people, then unnoticed work is wasted work. But if the audience is God, then nothing done faithfully is ever invisible. The spreadsheet can be worship. The diaper change can be worship. The extra care you take when no one is checking? He sees all of it.

Try this today

Take the most thankless task on your list today and, before you start it, dedicate it: "Lord, this one's for You." Then do it the way you'd do it if He were the one receiving it, because He is.

Lord, teach me to work for an audience of One. Make my ordinary work an offering today. Amen.
